• Art Crime by John E. Conklin ~ a good, although basic primer on art crime. A bit dry, but overall a good resource. Currently out of print.

  • The Caravaggio Conspiracy ~ A True Story of Deception, Theft, and Smuggling in the Art World, by Peter Watson ~ reads like a novel, but is unfortunately out of print. Despite being published in the mid-eighties, it still contains some excellent information on art crime. Worth searching the used bookstores for a copy.

  • Sotheby's ~ The Inside Story, by Peter Watson ~ I'm afraid this one may be out of print as well, although current events may spark interest in another print run. An engaging exposé on the auction house business.

  • False Impressions ~ The Hunt for Big-Time Art Fakes, by Peter Hoving ~ Hoving is quite taken with himself, but then if I were Hoving, I would be too. Still, an easy read that provides some background into the history of fakes and forgers, something that's been around for as long as there has been art.
